But with growing popularity of XP10, virtual airliners are starting to show more interest in X-plane. Many cities unfortunately do not show landmark buildings.ģ) Lastly, ATC and AI (artificial intelligence) is very much work in progress. But by all means go watch some of the screenshots and vids in the X-plane screenshots and video forum.Ģ) Although X-Plane has started to attract some excellent commercial 3PD and is increasingly catching up with FSX in that area, some sceneries, and more in particular very detailed airport sceneries, are still lacking. Fortunately, there's a lot of freeware out there to change the X-Plane world into something that more or less matches "FSX + numerous add-ons", but you don't get it out of the box. In principle, it can offer you everything FSX has to offer, and more, but there are a few caveats.ġ) It requires some work and know-how before you get it running to your satisfaction. Truth be told, 3PD have transformed FSX beyond recognition, but add-ons will always be on top of the good ol' FSX engine, slowly but surely showing its age.Īs for X-plane, it's continuously under development. It is mostly 3PD (third party developers) that have kept FSX alive. And some still report problems with FSX, which may be one of the main reasons why they stick with FS2004 (Century Of Flight).Ģ) There is a thriving business of (freeware & payware) add-ons for FSX (and to a lesser extent FS2004). But - see above - FSX will never catch up with the most recent hardware. One could say that "hardware has finally caught up with FSX". In other words, in terms of future development FSX is a dead end.ġ) It is claimed that on current hardware systems FSX is stable and smooth. Dovetail acquired the rights to distribute FSX through STEAM, but they do not have the rights to further develop FSX. Of course, FSX will never be a 64-bit application. Need I remind you DX10 was released in 2006? Very recently, there was / is a scam where the perpetrators claim(ed) they could turn FSX into a 64-bit application. Someone made a "DX10 Fixer", with mixed results, but this program was withdrawn from sale a few months ago. For example, FSX has a "DX10 Preview" mode, where the full DX10 mode was scheduled to make its full appearance in FS XI. FSX has not been under development since. Microsoft abandoned Flight Simulator early 2009.
